Activating The Witness - facilitated by Robert Picciotto

“The ability to observe without evaluating is the highest form of intelligence.” ― Jiddu Krishnamurti

“The Witness” is a term that refers to the part of your consciousness that can be a neutral observer of your own life. The Witness understands that it does not have to identify with the thoughts or emotions one might experience. It’s a beautiful anchoring device because it recognizes that if your thoughts or feelings begin to spiral out of control, you can take a step back and say “That’s not me, that’s just something that’s happening within me”. Just like a heart beats and lungs breathe, a mind thinks. It’s what the mind was designed to do, but it’s not who you are. You are no more your own thoughts than you are a breath of air you take. The wave is not the ocean.

When we activate The Witness within us we suddenly become aware of a truer identity and open ourselves up to connecting more deeply with ourselves, with others, and with our surroundings. When we realize that we don’t have to be constantly analyzing, judging, and evaluating, we allow ourselves to experience and appreciate each moment more fully.

In this meditation we will be using the power of sound, breath, and our ability to focus our attention to develop The Witness and to access deep parts of our own consciousness. Our goal will be to access untapped truths buried deep inside all of us, to dissolve the boundaries we imagine to be real, to reveal the connection between our outer and inner worlds and ultimately to become aware of awareness itself.

Our shared experience will be divided into four parts:

1. Discussion - A short talk about the nature of sound and its therapeutic applications. We’ll go over some basic mindfulness and listening techniques to ensure that everyone has the necessary tools to get the most out of the experience.

2. Set and Setting - Setting our intentions and settling into the space. Together we will create a safe and supportive environment of trust and acceptance to facilitate a state of self-healing through synchronized breathing and visualization techniques.

3. Listening - Utilizing a selection of overtone-emitting instruments we will achieve a state of shared consciousness by individually focusing each of our attentions on a single source.

4. Integration - As we return from our collective journey inward, everyone will be given a chance to share what they observed and experienced. We'll discuss how to best integrate those experiences into our daily practice.

Please try to bring a mat and a blanket to lay on, as well as an eye mask, a bottle of water, and anything else you might like to have on hand such as a notepad or journal, or any objects personally relevant to you. If you're unable to bring a mat or blanket we will have a few extras on hand. Remember to dress comfortably and try your best to eat lightly before the meditation, and come with a clear mind and an open heart.

Please arrive a few minutes early to ensure we can begin on time.
